When your child is learning to talk it is a very serious milestone. However, it does not have to be serious all the time. Kids love the sound of rhymes and enjoy mimicking animal sounds. You may notice that some of your child’s first words are “moo” and “quack”.
Certainly you want you child to learn the proper names for things but when they are first beginning to speak the concept that things have specific names is far more important than calling a rooster by its proper name rather than a “doodle do”. There will be plenty of time for that in the future. Besides seeing how excited he is to match the sound with the picture of the animal is very entertaining to me because by the seventh reading of The Very Busy Spider I am more than a little bored with the story. You will be surprised how quickly your toddler will learn to tell cats from dogs even when the colors and breeds change.
Don’t be afraid to jump right in and get silly at story time. Combine how does a duck walk with how does a duck sound. Surely everyone will be cracking up as you quack and waddle around the living room.
