The Crib: A Blog for New Parents
'Twas The Week Before Christmas
Not a creature was laughing, especially not my spouse
My stockings were rolled to my ankles with care
Because they wouldn’t go any higher than there
The siblings were nestled snug in their beds
While dreams of new babies cried in their heads
And Daddy in his recliner, reading the news
While I tried to remember if I had on any shoes
When down on the floor, I heard first a patter
Before my water broke with a huge gushing splatter
I tried not to scream with the accompanying pain
My attempts to be quiet were only in vain
Husband came running, and fainted with a crash
That woke all the siblings, who came at a dash
I collapsed in a chair, to gather my thoughts
For my mind was just racing with forgotten “I ought’s”
I ought to have finished the rest of the shopping
I ought to have done the kitchen floor mopping
I ought to send daughter upstairs for my bag
I ought to send oldest son downstairs for a rag
I ought to be locked up for wanting one more
I ought to wake husband, from off the floor
So blessed daughter brought my suitcase
And dear son cleaned up the water all over the place
Sweet husband assisted me out to the car
We dropped the kids at my sisters, ‘twas not very far
Then off to the doctor we went with all haste
While I counted each breath with too little grace
Much cursing ensued, and 15 hours later, I lay snug in my bed
With brand new tiny baby asleep near my head
Proud Daddy sits near us, holding my hand
The siblings will be here tomorrow as planned
Then we’ll all go home together, my family so dear
And rejoice in the gift we were given this year
