The Crib: A Blog for New Parents
Sleepy Anyone?
I read recently that new mothers lose between 400 and 750 hours of sleep during the first year of their child’s life. That is 7 to 14 hours a week!!Not even considering that the sleep you do get is often interrupted and scattered throughout the day.My children are so close together that I often joke that I haven’t slept in three year.
Most people expect this sleep crisis but are not prepared with just how life altering it can become. Many new mothers spend the first few weeks in haze as they adjust to the new schedule that the thrust upon them. The key to keeping your sanity and health during this time is to remember a few key factors.
- This will not last forever. The schedule your child begins with will start to change almost as soon as they settle into a schedule. They will begin to grow and eat more per feeding.
- Lean on others.Let your mom, husband or friends help where they can. Keep your focus on baby.Let them handle all of the other details.
- Remember that driving while tired is sometimes as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. If you have been awake for more than 17 hours straight or feel extremely drowsy, don’t risk getting behind the wheel.
- Nap when you can.Even a short 15 minute cat nap will help refresh you for while.
