When you are pregnant every sense is sharpened especially taste and smell. Very early in pregnancy you will find yourself noticing an increase in the sensitivity of these two senses. I noticed smell first. I could smell coffee from three rooms away and tell you which kids at daycare needed a new pamper just by walking in the room. It was amazing. I also took my two year old to the doctor once during my third pregnancy because his ear smelled funny. My husband thought I was insane but the doctor confirmed that he had an ear infection. This gift however, can be the downfall of many pregnant women with sensitive stomachs. Some friends of mine have banned certain smells from their home completely.
Taste is also heightened. Everything just tastes more. This can work both directions. You may find yourself craving foods you don’t normally eat or detesting foods you use to love. Many pregnant women find it necessary to stick to a more bland diet while pregnant. With my first and third children I was completely taken in by Gala Apples dipped in caramel (It was Cherry Snow Cones with the second). It was the best thing I ever tasted. I ate them almost every night for the last month of pregnancy. When I tried some the other day, I didn’t feel the same way. I guess my super taste faded away. I wish my pregnancy pounds would go as easily.
